What Does Out of Bounds Mean in Astrology?
An out-of-bounds planet is defined by declination, not by its zodiac sign or ordinary 0°–360° longitude. Declination measures angular distance north or south of the celestial equator. A planet is called out of bounds when its declination exceeds the Sun’s maximum seasonal declination, approximately the current obliquity of the ecliptic—about 23°26′ in the modern era.

A Mars at 12° Gemini might be in bounds or out of bounds; the sign degree alone cannot tell you. You need equatorial declination. That is why a standard tropical longitude calculator should not add an out-of-bounds label unless it is explicitly calculating the second coordinate system as well.

From Earth, the Sun’s declination moves between northern and southern limits over the year, creating the solstitial extremes associated with the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
