Synastry house overlays

Read where the contact lands.
Keep the direction visible.

House overlays show where one person’s planet lands in the other person’s timed house frame. They are directional, time-sensitive, and best read beside aspects—not as a compatibility score.

Calculation first

A planet-person and a house-person are not interchangeable.

If your Venus falls in someone’s 7th house, that does not put their Venus in your 7th. Velvet Zodiac calculates A → B and B → A separately, and it can preserve one reliable direction when only one receiving birth time is known.

Unknown receiving time means no exact house frame. For an approximate time, Velvet Zodiac scans every valid minute in the declared interval: an overlay is Stable only if the receiving house survives the full range, otherwise it is Boundary-sensitive. Whole Sign, Equal House, and Placidus are disclosed, and a center placement within 2° of a cusp receives a separate boundary caution rather than being silently reassigned.

Common questions

What should I verify before reading an overlay?

Do I need both birth times?

No for every direction. You need a reliable birth time for the receiving chart whose houses are being used. If only one person has a known time, Velvet Zodiac can still show the other person’s planets entering that timed chart and withhold the unsupported reverse.

Can house systems disagree?

Yes. Whole Sign, Equal House, and Placidus can place a planet differently near boundaries. That is why the calculator exposes the selected system and shows a cusp-distance caution instead of hiding the methodology.
