Applying vs. Separating Aspects: What Is the Difference?
An applying aspect is moving toward exactness; a separating aspect has already passed exactness and is moving away. To determine the distinction correctly, you need more than the current angle—you need planetary motion. In a simple two-planet case, the faster body is commonly used to judge whether the exact aspect is approaching or receding, though retrograde motion can make the geometry less intuitive.

The same orb can be applying or separating
Two charts might both show Mars 3° from a square to Saturn. In one, Mars may be closing the gap and the square is applying; in the other, Mars may have just passed the exact square and the aspect is separating. A static list of longitudes is not enough to tell which one you have without checking motion.
